I thought it would be nice to have the opportunity for members of the board to meet in person.  I'm willing to organize a happy hour in New York on a Wednesday or Thursday night, if other people are interested.  Let me know.

Sounds like a great idea.  I would like to start having more of these types of events, even if they are sometimes less formal than some typical association events or meetings.

sounds like a great idea. A weekend event in Atlantic City would be a great start for what could be an annual conference.

This sounds like an excellent idea.  I manage a team of analysts at a small healthcare PE/VC with some asset mgmt on the side.  Would be great to make additional contacts.

The response to my suggestion of a happy hour has been somewhat underwhelming.  But I've received messages from 5 or 6 people who said they were interested, so I'm going to move forward.  It will be low key, but should be fun.

However, I thought I would bump this message up before picking a time and place.  I would like to get an idea of how many people were interested so I can judge the space needed.  But if not, I'll just pick a bar and we'll see.  It may be just myself drinking in the corner…  ha!

I hope everyone's having a good summer.

I could also do a few blog posts about this event if you would like to secure a location and time and fill me in on the details 6 weeks in advance.

Maybe it could be a recurring "Hedge Fund Happy Hour" in Manhattan.  Any suggestions on a great location?

What about the Bryant Park Cafe? It is centrally located and might be convenient for a number of people. How about making planning for the last Thursday of every month?

Ok, sorry for falling down on the job.  But I'm ready to move forward and finalize the details soon.

I was going to take the suggestion of having the happy hour on Thursday, August 28th, the last Thursday of the month, and try to make it a monthly event.  If anyone knows of another group using that date, please let me know.

I had someone suggest the Rise Bar at the Ritz at Battery Park.  They require 40 people and a $2,000 minimum charge to rope off an area.  I called Bryant Park Cafe, but need to call the catering group if we want to set aside an area.  Both of those may be ambitious for our first event.  Any other suggestions?

Feel free to email me directly.

Hedge Fund Group Happy Hour!

...an informal gathering of friends in the business

Thursday, August 28, 2008

Bryant Park Grill on the Rooftop

6:00 pm

Yes, this is last minute, but if you're in the area of the Bryant Park Grill, on Thursday, August 28, 2008, we will do our first happy hour.  It will be very informal and hopefully the start of a monthly event.

Bryant Park Grill is located behind the New York Public Library in midtown Manhattan.  The address is 25 West 40th Street, which is between 5th and 6th/Avenue of the Americas.  Take the F, V, B or D train to 42nd street/Bryant Park or take the 7 train to 5th Avenue.  It will start at 6:00 pm and go at least until 8:00 pm, probably longer.

We will meet on the rooftop bar, weather permitting.  We have not reserved a space, so just look for the group of people who look like they work for a hedge fund, want to work for a hedge fund, or want to sell something to a hedge fund...  (I'm the short guy in the navy blazer.)

If possible, please send the number of people planning on attending to either:

Eric Hoyle: ehoyle@elkrivertrading.com

or

Mark McClanahan: markmcc@headlineinvestments.com

To sign up for future hedge fund events, please register at: http://richard-wilson.blogspot.com/2008/08/hedge-fund-conference.html.

Look forward to seeing you there!

There is a happy hour networking event for hedge fund managers and asset managers tomorrow evening (Tuesday, Sept. 9, 6:30-9:00 pm) at Lucy's Latin Bistro in Gramercy/Flatiron.  Should be a decent turnout.

The Boston event went very well. We had over 70 professionals attend and we hope to have a local event in Boston every two months. We are in discussions with groups to help host potential events in San Francisco / San Diego and possible Chicago or CT.  Please stay tuned here, through the blog and the Hedge Fund Group (HFG) Events Page for more details.
